Photo Journey Tibet with Tokpa Korlo

Hark, ye travel and photography enthusiasts!
Word is out that one of Dharma:Doo’s Siddhartists is offering a real treat to you. Those of you who take an interest in Tibetan Buddhism may already be familiar with his excellent work. Personally, I am highly impressed by his photos of dharma teachers. The way he catches athmosphere is breathtaking. Meanwhile he is also a composer of music and fairly accustomed to traveling. The latter is a bit of an understatement as rumour has it that traveling is his way of living. I am talking of course about photographer Tokpa Korlo.

Now, what it’s all about: Tokpa is going to lead a photo tour to Tibet from May 19th to June 6th 2018 and it will be open to professionels and amateurs alike! Here is what he’s offering:
„We will venture as group, trekking and exploring sacred sites and our creative sides, while I teach you all about your camera and how to make the best photos possible, with group photo editing classes, tricks, techniques and teachings as we go along. And every night we’ll sit down together over a cup of tea and see what we shot. “
Sounds cozy, doesn’t it? But don’t be fooled, there might be a lot of adventure. Sights and locations to be visited are amongst others:
- Lhasa: Potala Palace, Jokhang Monastery, Barkhor Market
- Lake Manasarovar
- Mount Kailash via Yak trekking
The tour is organised by Ten Directions. This German travel agency, founded on behalf of the late Shamar Rinpoche in 2014, offers group travel to Asia.
Does this mean that the photo tour is for Buddhists only?
No, it doesn’t! Although Buddhist pilgrimages are part of Ten Directions program, director Sebastian Maier-Hallard has assured me that the photo tour is also suitable for people with a non-Buddhist background and not intended to be a pilgrimage.
Nevertheless, I would recommend some interest in Buddhism. After all Tibet has been highly influenced by Buddhism for centuries and several visits of monasteries and holy sites are scheduled.
Being asked, why they chose Tibet for their first photo tour, Maier-Hallard is quick to answer: „Tibet is a dream destination for photographers: wide skies, diverse landscape and intense colours.“
Do you like it so far? – Good. Now, it’s time to open the bag and see what’s in it for you.
The tour costs 3999€. In my opinion, this is a rather fair price.
First of all, you’ll be spending more than two weeks with an excellent photographer who is willing to teach you a lot about his and hopefully your passion.
Secondly, the tour starts and finishes in Kathmandu, Nepal. Flights from/to main cities in Europe to Kathmandu as well as transfer flights Kathmandu – Lhasa are included. Overnight stays in hotels/guesthouses, entrance fees and full board in Tibet except Lhasa and Kathmandu are also part of the deal. Only a bit of a spoiler for those who are not keen on sharing a double room. For single rooms, one needs to spend another 580€.
Furthermore, you’ll have to apply for visas to China, Tibet and Nepal. Fees aren’t included. However, Ten Directions is willing to help you obtain your visas, which is going to make a great difference to you. Maybe not in your purse, but to your nerves.
By the way, the tour takes place with a minimum of ten participants and is limited to sixteen.
Application deadline is March 15th 2018.
